What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

I would highly recommend this dental clinicGary, US, 17 07 22

Marietta Dental Care Clinic was the most amazing and professional experience I've had in years. The first day on Thursday I had a whitening treatment, the second day on Friday I had two implants and then the third day was a final checkup, where they allowed me to go home. Everything from the hotel they put me in to the driver who took me anywhere I wanted to go and the great professionalism of the front office was nothing but first rate all the way around. I would highly recommend this dental clinic. I am so happy with the work I got done. And the best part of it all, it was so reasonably priced for what I got. Well done guys! Thank you to the Marietta dental Care clinic. Moving forward, I now wait 4 months, and I return in the middle of November to get my two zirconian crowns. I will be so happy once I have all my teeth back.

I felt so safe and comfortable in the officeDennie, US, 23 07 23

Only in need of dental work the last year and a half, so dental treatment is new to me. My American experience was horrible. The Dentist in Denver almost killed me. I was sent all of the place for a root canal. In the last appointment, as the Dentist was putting on the crown, I had a stroke/seizure. I woke up to resuscitation by Emergency Professionals. No more seeing 4 dental offices for one treatment. So shopped online, and found great reviews for Vivant. Through emails and phone conversations with Zihad Lopez, the patient coordinator, I made a trip to Vivant in Los Algodones. They were very attentive, reviewed all my dental issues, and began my first step in an implant. Very carefully, used a local anesthesia that would not harm me or stop my heart like epinephrine, but a safe anesthesia, and it was very gentle and timely. My aftercare has been fantastic as I am home in Denver, but have already received 7 follow-ups. I return in 5 months and really look forward to seeing Dr. Marco Ramos and his entire team, dental surgeon and implant specialist in one place and all delighted to review your dental needs. One office does it all. Pricing was slightly higher then the other local Los Algodones dental offices, but for the special care and excellent surgeon, it is so worth it. As a doctor myself, this is the most professional office I have been to in over 20 years, and this is how medicine should be, especially dental care. I intend to be a lifelong patient, as I felt so safe and comfortable in the office of Vivant Smile and their staff. Dr. Dennie Dorall, MD, ND, DHM, DWHH

I went to Circle Dental, Dr. Jimenez’s practice, I was very pleased with the work and service I received from the staff and dentist. They accommodated me in every way, from assisting me in my accommodations during the time I stayed until the time I departed. There liaison “Alli” was always available for assistance if needed. I’m very pleased with the dental work I received and the cost was much more economical than any thing I could have gotten or inquired about in the states. I recommend “Circle Dental”. The staff was warm, friendly and knowledgeable. Thank you “ Circle dental for such good work and friendly staff. Don’t want to go anywhere else but “Circle Dental”

Dr Guillermio Marquez Reyes is amazzing. Befor I became a nurse I was a Dental assistant so I sort of knew a few things. He has saved my teeth, and improved my bite. I sure wish could find a doctor I have as much faith in as I do in this dentist. If I move across the country I will still come to see him. He has been my dentist for amost 15 years.

Dental Crowns $350 - $450
A dental crown is a cap-like restoration used to cover a damaged tooth. Crowns can give support to misshapen or badly broken teeth and permanently replace missing teeth to complete a smile or improve a bite pattern. They may be molded from metal, ceramic, plastics, or combinations of all three. They are cemented in place and coated to make them more natural looking. Historically, a variety of materials have been used as tooth replacements. The ancient Egyptians used animal teeth and pieces of bone as primitive replacement materials. More recently, artificial teeth have been fabricated from substances such as ivory, porcelain, and even platinum. With modern technology, high quality tooth replacements can be made from synthetic plastic resins, ceramic composites, and lightweight metal alloys.
Permanent Crown $350 - $450
Permanent crowns can be made from all metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all resin, or all ceramic. Metals used in crowns include gold alloy, other alloys (for example, palladium) or a base-metal alloy (for example, nickel or chromium). Compared with other crown types, less tooth structure needs to be removed with metal crowns, and tooth wear to opposing teeth is kept to a minimum. Metal crowns withstand biting and chewing forces well and probably last the longest in terms of wear down. Also, metal crowns rarely chip or break. The metallic color is the main drawback. Metal crowns are a good choice for out-of-sight molars. Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns can be color matched to your adjacent teeth (unlike the metallic crowns). However, more wearing to the opposing teeth occurs with this crown type compared with metal or resin crowns. The crowns porcelain portion can also chip or break off. Next to all-ceramic crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns look most like normal teeth. However, sometimes the metal underlying the crowns porcelain can show through as a dark line, especially at the gum line and even more so if your gums recede. These crowns can be a good choice for front or back teeth. All-resin dental crowns are less expensive than other crown types. However, they wear down over time and are more prone to fractures than porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. All-ceramic or all-porcelain dental crowns provide the best natural color match than any other crown type and may be more suitable for people with metal allergies. However, they are not as strong as porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and they wear down opposing teeth a little more than metal or resin crowns. All-ceramic crowns are a good choice for front teeth. Temporary versus permanent. Temporary crowns can be made in your dentists office whereas permanent crowns are made in a dental laboratory.
Temporary Crown $30 - $50
A temporary crown is a provisional, short term restoration used in dentistry. Usually the temporary crown is constructed from a chemical-cure composite, although alternative systems using aluminium crown forms are occasionally used by practitioners. The temporary material is shaped by the dentist to form a tooth shape that protects the prepared tooth, prevents damage to the periodontal tissues (gums) and disguises the prepared tooth to a degree until the final, definitive restoration can be made by a dental technician. A temporary crown will usually be cemented in place with a soft temporary dental cement, such as Temp-Bond NE. This allows easy removal when fitting the definitve restoration. If a temporary crown becomes decemented, it is important that a dentist examine the patient as overeruption of the opposing teeth may prevent accurate fitting of the final crown.

Much to my surprise, it was not as difficult as I thoughtAngelica, US, 01 08 18

I had been wanting a tooth implant for a while and was really hesitant to go to Mexico. After much discussion with my husband, I decided to go. Much to my surprise, it was not as difficult as I thought. We were there with Dr Ramos early one morning, had a 3D x-ray done a few blocks away and confirmed that I was a candidate for the implant. It took about 40 minutes for the whole procedure. I have gone for a 2 week follow up for removal of stitches and will return in 4 months for the abutment and after that crown. Very happy so far.
