What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are artificial screws made of titanium or zirconium oxide that connect the jawbone and a dental restoration like a crown or denture. They are also called ‘endosseous’ implants or fixtures. They are an artificial tooth root. Once implanted, the implant integrates with the surrounding bone like part of the body. Dental surgeons perform bone grafting procedures to hold the implant in place for patients who do not have enough surrounding bone structure, or graft bone to help connect implants to the maxillary sinuses on either side of the nose when placing dental implants in the upper jaw.

How long does it take to fit a Dental Implant?

The time taken for inserting dental implants depends on the bone structure and needs of each individual patient. Some implant procedures take about 15 minutes while others may take up to two hours. Implant procedures are performed under local anaesthesia. Intravenous sedation is used for the comfort of anxious patients.

How long does it take to recover after getting a Dental Implant?

Recovery time after a dental implant procedure may take four to six weeks or up to 12 weeks for some patients. Patients can travel one day after the insertion of a single dental implant. Patients who require multiple dental implants or supporting surgical procedures should wait for around two weeks before travelling. They should meet the dental surgeon to get a certification of being fit to travel before embarking on their journey.

What should I do after getting a Dental Implant?

Patients should rest and avoid exertion after surgery. They should also avoid vigorously brushing their teeth or rinsing their mouth.

I have had a number of treatments (both with Michael and Shona), which have been expertly (and compassionately done; a nervous patient me!). Thanks to the brilliant rapport which all of the staff immediately established with both of the children. They quite happily attend their check-ups. Wholeheartedly recommend this clinic to all. I was really impressed; same day dentures repair. The dentist was really nice and patient, and had my dentures back in three hours. I was really impressed; they got back to me within minutes and had an appointment in two hours. The clinic is modern and staff very helpful. I would definitely recommend this dental practice.

I chipped my front tooth and needed a filling as soon as possible, they did it for me in within 24 hours and my tooth looks exactly the same as before. Delighted! I didn't feel a thing and was all finished in 30 mins. I've been going to Terrence for the past five years. Always thoroughly happy with the service, they are all so helpful and gentle. The treatment is always top class and my lifelong fear of dentists is long gone. My dental and, as a result, my general health has improved greatly since this excellent clinic opened in Loughrea.

I had a very complicated implant. The treatment and care was excellent. I would be very happy to return to ash grove dental if I have any other problems. The oral hygienists really educated me on how to take care of my oral hygiene. Everybody in the clinic is very friendly and professional. Very nice people to deal with and staff seem to enjoy their work. Standards are very high in the clinic. I would have no problem recommending ash grove to family and friends.

My treatment was a general check up, x-rays, clean, polish and a "coating" - (my words) on 2 exposed canine roots. I was given useful advice and treated with great care & encouragement. This has not always been my experience. The treatment I received and the time spent was certainly value for money. With trepidation I arrived for my first visit in a very long time to see a dentist. I was met by a very friendly receptionist and put at ease instantly by Brian McCaughey. I would most definitely recommend Brian McCaughey to anyone looking for a new dentist, and although he is moving to Grange in the next few weeks, I will certainly continue to be a patient and cannot recommend him highly enough.
