What are braces?

Braces are dental devices used to align teeth correctly so that patients get beautiful smiles, comfortable bites and clear speech. The dental speciality that covers braces is called orthodontics.

What types of braces are available?

Braces are structural or cosmetic. Structural braces are fitted for children while cosmetic braces are placed for adults and adolescents. Braces may be fixed or removable. Structural or traditional braces are made of stainless steel. Cosmetic braces are made of clear ceramic material or clear plastic. Some braces are self-ligating, that is, they use a slide mechanism rather than elastic bands to connect to the dental archwire. Lingual braces are metal braces placed on the inner surface of teeth. This type of brace is not visible and are preferred by patients requiring cosmetic braces.

How long do you have to wear braces for?

The length of orthodontic treatment depends on the needs and orthodontic problems of each individual patient. Treatments for adults may take a longer time. On average, patients need to wear braces for about 2 years and then they need to wear a retainer to maintain the corrected position of teeth. For some adults treatment may take about 3 years.

How are braces installed on teeth?

For fixed braces, the orthodontist dries the teeth and places glue or bonding cement on the braces. The braces are placed on teeth and a UV light is shone on them to cure the glue or cement. For removable braces, an impression of the teeth is taken and a technician makes the removable brace consisting of a plastic plate and wires. The brace is then fitted on teeth.

How do braces work on teeth?

Braces exert a steady pressure on teeth. The pressure is periodically adjusted as needed by the orthodontist. Eventually the pressure exerted by braces corrects the alignment of teeth.

Do braces hurt?

Braces are uncomfortable when first placed on teeth. Patients experience soreness and need to get used to the pressure exerted on the teeth by braces. Patients normally get used to braces within a month.

My son has been having orthodontic treatment with Dr Ó Droma for the last year with excellent results. He (as well as his assistant) is very kind and my son has always been happy to go for checkups, turning / wearing his appliance / retainer. We are nearing the end of the process, and I'm so glad we didn't wait until he was older as we originally considered. When I needed a crown done at short notice, I was seen quickly. Surprisingly (I am a very nervous patient), I found the visit not traumatic in the least, and I will have all future work done here. As far as value - for the quality of work and products used, I believe this is very good value. I initially chose the practice because the prices seemed lower than others in the area. For my son, the free consultation was good as it gave a better idea of what was needed and what it would cost. It didn't feel as if additional treatments would be suggested just for more profit. The practice doesn't look as swanky as many others in the area, but when it comes down to what is needed (plus new and modern equipment), this doesn't stand back in the least.

I had a good experience at O' Droma's clinic. It offers great value for money and is in close proximity to where I live, which I found very convenient. I would definitely recommend the clinic. Great value for money!

Clean, examination and X-rays. Great value for money, exceptionally genuine, and friendly staff. Very relaxed atmosphere. I was seen immediately at my scheduled appointment time and was put at ease straight away by the warm staff. An amazing clinic. I have had terrible experiences over the last few years with money-hungry dentists misinforming me about my teeth. It is such a relief to find an honest, caring, and reliable dentist. Went to have a wisdom tooth extraction today! The whole procedure and experience was great! Nicola and team are brilliant! I didn't feel a thing! Would highly recommend going here if you have a phobia of going to the Dentist! Prices are very reasonable! Paid €180 to have it out and Dental hospital have a 18 month waiting list for procedure and were charging me €245 for the pleasure of a student to pull it out???? So if you're looking for a professional/friendly Dentist, this is the place to go:-)

My daughter got braces on to straighten her teeth. I'm so delighted with the treatment she received. Her braces were taken off three months ahead of schedule due to the fantastic treatment and care she received. Our experience of the clinic was 100%. I had an initial consultation with Dr. Keenan to discuss orthodontics. I had an X-ray done and set up an appointment for teeth cleaning the very next week My experience was wonderful. The staff was courteous, helpful and professional. The fees are reasonable and customary. The facility was very clean and pleasant. It's conveniently located too.
