Chemical Peel

Chemical Peeling is a technique used to freshen facial skin in a controlled way. Mr Matthews uses the TCA (Tri-Chloracetic Acid) Blue Peel devised by the celebrated Professor Zein Obagi, whom Mr Matthews hosted for Professor Obagi’s first ever UK Blue Peel seminar, in Coventry in the early ‘90’s. The beauty of this method is that, unlike phenol peels (Mr Matthews does not favour fruit acid peels as they are generally very superficial and transient), it is possible to ‘read’ the changing appearance of the skin whilst doing the Peel on account of the Blue dye mixed in with the TCA. This allows the skilled Peeler to take the Peel down to the optimal level in the skin to produce the desired effect and also to avoid going too deep with the attendant risk of scarring.

Dermal Fillers

Mr Matthews favours the use of hyaluronic based fillers which require a top-up after four to six months rather than permanent fillers with ‘foreign material’ as these can sometimes cause great trouble if, for instance, infection occurs. The injection are carried out on an outpatient basis, with or without local anaesthetic as necessary. Restylane causes some localised redness which tends to settle quickly (approximately 24 hours).

Treatment for Wrinkles

This is done to improve/abolish facial wrinkles through muscle relaxation on a temporary basis. Very small doses are injected through a very fine needle into the area between the eyebrows (glabella) for central frown-lines, the forehead for forehead wrinkles and/or the outer lower eyelid area to treat ‘Crow’s Feet’ creasing. The injections block fine receptor sites on muscles so that the chemical interaction with tiny nearby nerve endings cannot work when the nerve tries to make the muscle contract. As a result, the muscle relaxes completely in that area and the wrinkles in the overlying skin are eased as well.

Job Title:
  Surgeon
Specialisations:
Cosmetic Surgery, Plastic and Reconstuctive Surgery
Biography:
Mr Richard Matthews is a highly experienced Consultant Cosmetic & Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon who aims to provide a Gold Standard of care.

At school, he studied Arts but, like his father who was also a distinguished Plastic Surgeon, was drawn to Medicine. After qualifying as a Doctor at St Thomas Hospital Medical School in London, Mr Matthews trained widely in General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology and Paediatric Surgery before commencing his career in Plastic Surgery, progressing through 5 Regional Centres for Burns & Plastic Surgery, absorbing the art and craft of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. This included 2 years as Burns Research Fellow at the renowned Queen Victoria Hospital and Blond-McIndoe Research Centre at East Grinstead, during which he had notable papers published on the management of burns in pregnancy and the use of amniotic membranes for wound healing.

He became fully accredited in Plastic Surgery, including Cosmetic and Reconstructive aspects, in 1984, was European Travelling Scholar of The British Association of Plastic Surgeons (now called BAPRAS) in 1985 and was appointed Consultant Plastic Surgeon in the National Health Service for Coventry & Warwickshire (catchment 1 million) in 1986.

From 1986 to 2006, when, as Head of the Unit, he effected its transfer to the new University Hospital for Coventry & Warwickshire, he radically modernised and expanded the Plastic Surgery Unit, introducing modern techniques and services for congenital abnormalities , such as cleft lip & palate and abnormal hands, for soft tissue diseases of the hand, such as Dupuytren’s contracture, for Breast Reconstruction and Head and Neck reconstruction in cancer cases, including microsurgical procedures, and worked hard to improve standards of care for skin cancer. He continues to treat skin cancer as a special interest, both on the NHS and privately, and served for 4 years as first Chair of the Skin Cancer Site Specific Group of the Arden Cancer Network.

Mr Matthews has been West Midlands Regional Chair for Burns & Plastic Surgery and Regional Specialty Advisor to the Royal College of Surgeons of England and has served variously as Clinical and Medical Director within the NHS.

Mr Matthews’ Private Practice has grown steadily over more than 20 years in which he has treated a large number of people with problems of a Cosmetic nature, as well as various Reconstructive requirements, Hand disease and Skin Cancer. In this, his reputation for excellence is based on his personal availability, attention to detail, favourable outcomes and sensitivity. His hobby-horse is good communication as a foundation for mutual trust. Some recent reduction in his NHS commitments has allowed even more attention to those in his private care.

The range of Cosmetic procedures carried out is shown on the Menu, each being backed by a wealth of experience. As a Member (and former Council Member and Chair of its Education & Research Subcommittee ) of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) and the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS), Mr Matthews keeps up to date, introducing change when appropriate and safe.

His Practice is very ‘hands on’, all consultations, procedures, whether surgical or non-surgical (such as fillers, etc), and follow-ups being carried out personally, rather than by third party lay counsellors or nurses. Unusually, when stitches need removing or dressings are required, Mr Matthews generally does this himself in order to monitor progress and recovery from the earliest moments onwards. Most of all, Mr Matthews takes great pride in his work, striving to provide satisfaction in all cases.
