Dr Mason is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Trafford General Hospital (part of the Trafford Healthcare NHS Trust) where he is also Medical Director. With a personal series well in excess of 10,000 upper GI endoscopies, he was the ideal choice to both place the majority of our Gastric Balloons and also to train other practitioners who join the Centre throughout the UK. As the NOSC’s Medical Director he is also responsible for overseeing all medical matters that arise within the Centre, including clinical governance, training, research, and our ongoing medical audit.
Dr Mason provides Gastric Balloon and EndoBarrier procedures.

Prof Nadey S Hakim

Professor Hakim is a General Bariatric and Transplant Surgeon. He is the Surgical Director of the West London Transplant Unit based at the Hammersmith Hospital. He has a particular interest and expertise in kidney and pancreas transplantation. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons. He obtained his MD from Paris Rene Descartes University; he received his surgical training at Guy’s Hospital in London and PhD in small bowel transplantation from University College London. He completed a Gastrointestinal Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic and Multiorgan Transplant Fellowship at the University of Minnesota.

To date he has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers and has written/edited 18 textbooks in the field of General Surgery, Bariatric Surgery and Transplantation. He is the Editor in Chief of International Surgery, a prestigious peer-reviewed journal and is on the Editorial Board of Transplant Proceedings, Graft, Experimental and Clinical Transplantation and of several other journals.

He is a member of the Kidney-Pancreas Committee of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTP) and Past President of the Transplantation Section of the Royal Society for Medicine.

He has been awarded an Honorary Professorship of the University of Sao Paolo, University of Lyon, University of Lima, Peru and University of Beshkent Ankara. He has been a visiting Professor at several prestigious centres including Harvard University.

He is the 35th World President of the International College of Surgeons, based in Chicago. Prior to his election he served as First Vice President and European Federation Secretary of this College.

He has recently been awarded the 2007 J Wesley Alexander Prize for outstanding research in the field of Transplantation.

Mr Simon Gibson

Mr David Galloway is a Consultant Surgeon in General and Colorectal Surgery at Gartnavel General Hospital and Western Infirmary in Glasgow. He is a specialist in Gastrointestinal Surgery, Advanced Laparoscopic techniques and Bariatric surgery, and is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Glasgow. He has been widely published in many well respected medical journals and has previously held senior positions in both London and New York. He also established a minimal access surgery for patients with clinically severe obesity.

Fellowships and memberships include: Member of the Surgical Research Society, Member of the Association of Endoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, Fellow of Cornell University Medical College, Fellow of the Association of Endoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland.

Mr Galloway provides both Gastric Balloon and Lap Band™ procedures.

Prof Majid Ali

Mr Ali obtained his MSc degree in Surgery from the University of Glasgow. He received his higher surgical training in advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery, working in units with high volumes of such procedures.

He is currently the lead Bariatric Consultant Surgeon in Ayrshire and Arran.

Mr Ali is a member of the European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons, the Severe and Complicated Obesity Treatment Service, the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society and the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland.

His interests include the treatment of severe and complicated obesity, advanced laparoscopic surgery, the laparoscopic treatment of reflux, hiatus hernia, groin and incisional hernia, gall bladder and general endoscopy.

Mr Gareth Hewitt

MB, BCh, BAO, FRCS (I), FRCS (Ed) (Gen)

Mr Hewitt is a Consultant General and Gastrointestinal Surgeon. He was appointed to his current NHS post in Craigavon Area Hospital in 1999. He is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. He is a member of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland.

His main interests are upper/lower Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and colo-rectal surgery. He has worked in Hillsborough Private Clinic since it opened in 2002. His bariatric speciality is insertion of the Gastric Balloon.

Dr James Rink

Mr. Rink is a Consultant Surgeon and Clinical Lead for Upper-GI and Bariatric Surgery for the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust. Following his graduation from Cambridge University Medical School, Mr Rink worked in East Anglia, the South West and on the South Coast. His specialist training was gained in the South-West Deanery, working in hospitals from Truro and Plymouth to Bath, Bristol and Gloucester. Having completed his training Mr Rink undertook fellowships in Bariatric and Specialist Upper GI Surgery at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester and the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth. Mr Rink offers a specialist service which encompasses Bariatric (weight loss) Surgery and Advanced Laparoscopic (keyhole) Surgery. He also offers a comprehensive general surgical service. Mr Shamsi El-Hasani

Mr El-Hasani has specialised for 32 years in upper gastrointestinal, gall bladder and weight loss surgery. Most of his work involves the use of laparoscopic (key hole) surgery. So far he has performed 1500 laparoscopic Gastric Bands, 600 laparoscopic Gastric Bypasses, and 195 endoscopic insertions of Gastric Balloon. He also regularly performs laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomies, and accepts the management of revisional bariatric surgery. Mr El-Hasani is closely involved in the surgical management of type 2 diabetes and he has recent international publication in this field. Mr Yashwant Koak

Mr Koak is a Consultant General, Laparoscopic, Bariatric and Upper GI Surgeon who has performed in excess of 5000 operations. Mr Koak qualified in medicine from the University of Glasgow and did his Basic Surgical training at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. He then joined the Royal Free Hospital to complete his Master of Surgery at the University of London. His Specialist Registrar training was in the North (East) London Deanery. After his CCST he spent a year as a Senior Clinical Fellow at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia, where he specialised in Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery. After his fellowship he worked as a GI surgeon at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, Cambridgeshire. During this time he also trained as a Medical Hypnotherapist. Mr Koak is a Consultant Bariatric and Upper GI Surgeon at Homerton University Hospital where the Bariatric Surgical Unit serves one of the largest numbers of patients in the UK. Mr Koak performs the Gastric Band and Gastric Sleeve for the National Obesity Surgery Centre.

Mr Roger Ackroyd

Mr Ackroyd is a fully qualified and accredited Consultant General Surgeon who specialises in surgical procedures for obesity. He qualified in medicine from Sheffield University in 1989 and trained in the UK, Europe and Australia. His special interest is in upper gastrointestinal surgery. He is a member of the British Obesity Surgery Society. Mr Ackroyd’s major clinical interests include oesophagogastric cancer surgery, anti-reflux surgery and gallbladder, hernia and obesity surgery. His research interests include ablation therapy for Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal cancer, clinical trials comparing different types of anti-reflux surgery and the metabolic effects of obesity surgery. Mr Ackroyd provides both Gastric Balloon, Gastric Band and Gastric Sleeve procedures.

Mr Akeil Samier

Mr Samier has an interest in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, general surgery and upper gastrointestinal surgery. He specialises in bariatric (weight loss) surgery. Mr Samier undertook surgical training at the gastrointestinal unit of the internationally acclaimed Academic Medical Centre (AMC) in Amsterdam. After completing further training in Switzerland and France, he moved to the UK to undertake a fellowship in bariatric and gastrointestinal surgery in Newcastle. Dr Premchand is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and is currently the Endoscopy Lead of Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust. The BHRT Gastroenterology Unit consists of ten gastroenterologists and ten surgeons and is a major centre for gastroenterology. He recently set up a referral centre for treating Refractory Irritable Bowel Disease and is the UK pioneer of the treatment Granulocute Apheresis. Mr Senapati is one of the leading Upper GI and Bariatric surgeons in the North West of England. He has been a consultant surgeon for 10 years. With his extensive surgical experience he has undertaken thousands of laparoscopic surgical procedures during this time. Following the completion of his higher surgical training he visited leading centres in America, Australia and Japan as a Surgical Fellow. This enabled him to enhance his skills in managing complex upper GI and Bariatric patients. Mr Senapati has presented extensively at both national and international level and he has published many significant papers in peer reviewed journals. Currently he is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester, a Member of the Diabetes and Obesity Research Network and CRG member for Obesity in England. He specialises in laparoscopic gastric cancer surgery, ambulatory bariatric surgery, day case surgery and enhanced recovery. He is currently based at Salford Royal Hospital, which is the regional centre for Upper GI and Bariatric surgery.
